For more than 100 years, Big Brothers Big Sisters has operated under the belief that inherent in every child is the ability to succeed and thrive in life. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Washtenaw County is a part of the nation’s largest donor and volunteer supported mentoring network. Big Brothers Big Sisters makes meaningful, monitored matches between adult volunteers (“Bigs”) and children (“Littles”), ages 7 through 15. Through our efforts we are developing positive relationships that have a direct and lasting effect on the lives of young people.
The Mission of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Washtenaw County is to match children with positive role models who offer them guidance and support in growing socially, emotionally and academically.
The Vision of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Washtenaw County is to match a Big Brother/Sister to every child in Washtenaw County that needs and wants one.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Washtenaw County aims to serve the children in our community who need us most, including those living in single parent homes, growing up in poverty and coping with parental incarceration.
We are starting something incredible every day by making great matches between our Bigs, the community volunteer mentors, and Littles, the children in our program. Making these matches in our community requires professional staff to enroll and support volunteers and families.
Before we make a match, we do our homework. After someone expresses an interest in becoming a Big, they go through an extensive background check and careful interview process. Then we match Bigs and Littles based on location, personalities and preferences. We provide full support from the start, so that matches can grow into lasting, fruitful friendships. It’s also important to note that the entire matching process is made possible through donations from individuals, corporations and foundations. We can’t do what we do best without them!
Each match is unique. Getting together doesn’t require a special occasion or expensive activity—just a few hours every month doing things the Little and Big already enjoy. We encourage, and help provide, free or low-cost activities for our matches because the focus during their time spent together should be on the relationship, not the extravagance.
